Quorum Sensing: Alcohols in a Social Situation

چکیده

Many microbes use extracellular signals to transmit information about population density and environmental conditions. Recent evidence suggests that the budding yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae exhibits this type of regulation and that the signals are aromatic alcohols.

Low concentrations of local honey modulate ETA expression, and quorum sensing related virulence in drug-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa recovered from infected burn wounds

Objective(s): Honey’s ability to kill microorganisms and even eradication of chronic infections with drug-resistant pathogens has been documented by numerous studies. The present study is focused on the action of honey in its sub-inhibitory levels to impact on the pathogens coordinated behaviors rather than killing them. Materials and Methods:</strong...

In silico structural analysis of quorum sensing genes in Vibrio fischeri

Quorum sensing controls the luminescence of Vibrio fischeri through the transcriptional activator LuxR and the specific autoinducer signal produced by luxI. Amino acid sequences of these two genes were analyzed using bioinformatics tools. LuxI consists of 193 amino acids and appears to contain five α-helices and six ß-sheets when analyzed by SSpro8. LuxI belongs to the autoinducer synthetase fa...

Quorum Sensing in Microbial Virulence

Cell-to cell communication occurs via a signaling pathway referred to as quorum sensing. There are four main types of these systems according to the chemical nature of signal molecules used by microorganisms to elicit expression of target genes in response to environmental stimuli or need of microbial communities. Type I system acts by using acyl homoserine lactones as signals to trigger the ex...

Transcriptional control of the quorum sensing response in yeast.

Quorum sensing is a process of intercellular communication. It allows individual cells to assess population density and to co-ordinate behaviour by secreting and sensing communication molecules. In the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae, the communication molecules are the aromatic alcohols tryptophol and phenylethanol, and quorum sensing regulates the transition between the solitary yeast form and...

Effect of alcohols on filamentation, growth, viability and biofilm development in Candida albicans

In this study we report the potential of alcohols as morphogenetic regulators in Candida albicans. All the alcohols tested influenced various modes of growth like planktonic as well as biofilm forms. Viability was affected at high concentrations. Among the alcohols, the response of C. albicans to amyl alcohol (pentanol) was noteworthy. Amyl alcohol at a concentration 0.5% which was not inhibito...
